Experience the Thrill of a Lifetime
An experienced skydiver died in Central Texas after a parachute malfunctioned on Friday. According to a statement released by Skydive Spaceland of San Marcos, the 31-year-old man was skydiving on his own during a self-supervised jump at its facility in Caldwell County when his primary parachute failed to open. The backup parachute was deployed, but the man died on impact, despite receiving immediate medical attention upon landing. Skydive Spaceland said the man was a licensed solo skydiver for more than four years and had completed multiple, successful jumps at its location before the incident.
The company has been in business for more than 18 years, and its tandem jumps start at $179 per person. Tandem jumpers are attached to an instructor who will guide them from 14,000 feet, freefalling at 120 miles per hour before deploying their parachute to land safely on the ground. Tandem jumps are perfect for first-time skydivers, as well as people who want to experience the thrill of jumping out of a plane without having to actually make the jump themselves.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified of the accident and will investigate. The agency typically conducts random inspections of skydiving centers to ensure they’re maintaining safe equipment and aircraft. In addition, the agency checks for improper packing of main and reserve parachutes and ensures that skydivers are properly trained to use their equipment.

According to the company, a 31-year-old licensed and experienced skydiver died Friday while skydiving in Fentress, about 20 minutes from San Marcos. The company says the skydiver was wearing their own equipment for a self-supervised skydive at the time of the incident, and it appears the main parachute malfunctioned. The backup parachute was deployed but the skydiver did not survive despite receiving immediate medical attention.
The FAA is investigating the packing of the main and reserve parachutes in this incident. Mascheck said the government agency also conducts random inspections of skydiving centers and their planes to determine if they are safe. He advised skydivers to always check their equipment and listen to their instructors. He also said that the equipment at Skydive Spaceland is inspected regularly and maintained to the highest standard.
