Located in the barbeque capital of Texas, Lockhart State Park is a small hidden gem campground. It is just a short drive from iconic restaurants such as Black’s, Smitty’s, and Kreuz Market. The campsites are set amongst the trees and have beautiful views of Clear Fork Creek.

Activities are offered throughout the weekend, including a guided hike and a conversation on Leave No Trace principles. Families can also participate in a fire building and cooking workshop, and learn how to use Dutch ovens.

RV camping is available at this campground, and hookups are available for most sites. You can search for RV sites in the State Park’s reservation system by the size of your rig. Campsites are subject to availability. Pool tickets and golf green fees are purchased separately from your campsite fee.


With almost 90 state parks in Texas, it’s not hard to find a quiet getaway off the beaten path. One such park in central Texas is Lockhart State Park, located a short drive from Austin and San Antonio. This 264-acre park is home to trails, a pool, a 9-hole golf course, and more.

The park’s trail system offers a variety of terrain, so it’s great for hikers and mountain bikers alike. There are a number of shorter trails that are perfect for novice hikers, while more challenging trails such as the Persimmon and Creek View Trails feature moderate elevation changes.

The park also contains the only known remains of a herd of Ice Age Columbian mammoths in the state. These findings are currently being analyzed by paleontologists. A must-see place here!


If you want to experience everything that a state park has to offer, you’ll find it at Lockhart State Park. It has all the usual hiking and camping opportunities along with a seasonal swimming pool and a nine-hole golf course. However, entrance to the pool and golf course is not included in the park’s campground or RV site fees.

Clear Fork Creek, a tributary of Plum Creek, is the scenic setting for the park’s fishing opportunities. Anglers can expect to catch sunfish, catfish, and bass here.

The 264-acre park is a great choice for campers seeking a more tranquil getaway from the busy Texas Hill Country area. Its year-round campground has 20 modern water and electric hookup RV sites that can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet.


Lockhart State Park has a lot to offer for picnickers. Located at the southwestern edge of the city, it features cabins, a swimming pool, a golf course, and designated trails. The park also offers boating, fishing, and camping.

It’s best to visit this park during the spring or fall. The summer’s heat can make the outdoors uncomfortable. During these seasons, the average daytime temperature is in the 70s and overnight temperatures are in the 50s.

If you’re looking for something a little different, the Cathedral of Junk is an intriguing art exhibit. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and creativity. For a more challenging hike, check out the Persimmon Trail and Rattlesnake Run (.5mi.). Both of these trails feature a moderate degree of elevation change.

The park hosts regular archery workshops and offers summer programs that include guided hikes, fishing clinics, air rifle classes, and swimming. It is a popular destination in the spring and fall when daytime temperatures are in the mid-70s and overnight temps drop to the low 50s.
